Series Overview
This series explores the wisdom of Proverbs and how God shapes everyday life through practical faith. Together, we will discover how godly wisdom transforms our relationships, character, decisions, and witness. In this session, we focus on the power of our words and how our speech can either bring healing and life or cause hurt and division.
Looking Back
Centring Activity
Begin by sitting quietly for one minute and reflecting on the words you have spoken this week. Invite the group to slowly pray together:
"Set a guard over my mouth, Lord; keep watch over the door of my lips." — Psalm 141:3
After the prayer, invite the group to share one encouraging or life-giving conversation they experienced recently.
Reflection Questions
- Over the past fortnight, when have your words reflected the love and wisdom of Jesus well?
- Was there a moment recently where your speech caused hurt, tension, or misunderstanding? What did you learn from it?
Looking Up
Read Together
Read Proverbs 18:21; Proverbs 12:18; and Proverbs 15:1–4 aloud together.
Discussion Questions
- What contrasts do you notice in these passages between harmful speech and life-giving speech?
- Why do you think words have such significant power in relationships and communities?
- Proverbs 15:1 says that "a gentle answer turns away wrath." Why can responding gently be so difficult in moments of conflict?
- Which image or phrase from these verses stands out to you most personally, and why?
Optional Resource
You may like to watch a short Bible Project video on wisdom literature before or after discussion to help frame the book of Proverbs:

Looking Ahead
Next Steps Questions
- Where in your life right now do you sense God inviting you to speak with more gentleness, wisdom, or encouragement?
- What practical step could you take this week to use your words to bring healing or life to someone else?
- Are there any habits of speech—such as gossip, sarcasm, anger, or criticism—that God may be asking you to surrender?
Encourage the group to intentionally encourage one person during the week through a message, conversation, or prayer.
Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for the gift and power of words. Help us to speak in ways that bring life, healing, wisdom, and peace. Forgive us for the times our speech has caused hurt or reflected anger instead of grace. Shape our hearts so that our words reflect the character of Jesus. Teach us to respond gently, encourage faithfully, and speak truth with love. May our conversations honour You and build others up.
Amen.
